Bulgaria Receives First F-16 Fighter Jet, Marking a Milestone in Defense Modernization

On April 2, 2025, Bulgaria received its first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet from the United States at the Graf Ignatievo Air Base, signaling a significant advancement in the country’s efforts to modernize its air force and align more closely with NATO standards.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov emphasized the symbolic importance of this delivery, highlighting it as a testament to the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the U.S.

The initial purchase of eight F-16 Block 70 jets was agreed upon in 2019 for $1.3 billion. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their arrival, initially scheduled for 2023. In 2022, Bulgaria signed a second contract with Lockheed Martin for an additional eight jets, which are expected to be delivered by 2027.

Since joining NATO in 2004, Bulgaria has sought to replace its outdated Soviet-era MiG-29 aircraft, although financial constraints have caused delays. With the war in Ukraine intensifying regional security concerns, Bulgaria has depended on NATO allies for air policing, underscoring the importance of this defense upgrade.

The acquisition of the F-16 Block 70 jets represents a significant step in enhancing Bulgaria’s air defense capabilities, demonstrating the country’s commitment to fulfilling its NATO obligations.a
