Sweden Procures 12 UH-60M in 900m$ Deal

Sweden procured twelve UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and a suite of related equipment, with an estimated value of $900 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) formally notified Congress of this potential sale today.

Sweden’s procurement request encompasses a comprehensive package aimed at enhancing its military capabilities. Alongside the twelve UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, Sweden seeks thirty T700-GE-701D engines—twenty-four to be installed and six as spares. The deal also includes seventeen AN/AAR-57 common missile warning systems (CMWS) and a variety of advanced avionics and support equipment such as radar warning receivers, laser detecting sets, tactical air navigation systems, and radar altimeters.

Furthermore, the sale package includes Enhanced Ballistic Armor Protection Systems (EBAPS), Internal Auxiliary Fuel Tank Systems (IAFTS), Fast Rope Insertion Extraction Systems (FRIES), external rescue hoists, and specialized crew seats. The procurement covers a wide range of additional components and services, including spare and repair parts, transportation, technical data, personnel training, and both U.S. Government and contractor support.

This proposed sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy objectives and national security interests, particularly in bolstering the defenses of NATO allies. Sweden, known for its political stability and economic progress, plays a crucial role in maintaining security in Europe. The acquisition of these advanced helicopters is expected to significantly enhance Sweden’s ability to deter and respond to current and future threats, as well as to support coalition operations alongside U.S. forces. The interoperability between U.S. and Swedish military forces is a key objective that this sale aims to achieve.

The principal contractor for this sale will be Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division, based in Stratford, Connecticut. Notably, there are no offset agreements associated with this deal, indicating a straightforward transaction focused solely on enhancing Sweden’s defense capabilities.

The UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters are renowned for their versatility and reliability in various military operations, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and search and rescue missions. Equipped with cutting-edge avionics and defensive systems, these helicopters will provide the Swedish Armed Forces with a formidable asset in their operational toolkit.

As Sweden continues to modernize its military, this acquisition represents a significant step in its defense strategy, reinforcing its position as a key NATO ally. The U.S. commitment to supporting Sweden’s defense needs reflects the broader goal of maintaining stability and security in the European region.
