Cyprus and UAE sign MoU for Military and Defense Cooperation

The United Arab Emirates and Cyprus have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), according to the Saudi Gazette reports, to enhance bilateral cooperation in the defense and military fields.

The MoU was signed by UAE’s Minister of State for Defense Affairs Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Bowardi and Cyprus’ Defense Minister Charalambos Petrides on Tuesday via video conferencing.

Al Bawardi commended the strategic relations between the UAE and Cyprus, highlighting that the signing of this MoU will contribute effectively to strengthening joint action in the military and defense fields with the aim of raising capabilities in these fields.

Cyprus already had military agreements with Egypt, Israel and Jordan, and its armed forces hold training exercises with the forces of those countries. The nation also has signed a deal to help train the Lebanonese Army.

Cyprus’ Defence Ministry said in a statement that the agreement with the UAE foresees the holding of joint military maneuvers, training programs and consultations on expanding operational cooperation.

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides signed the agreement during a teleconference and agreed to meet with his UAE counterpart once conditions relating to the coronavirus pandemic permit, the ministry said in a statement. Petrides hailed the agreement as the start of a long, powerful and strategic relationship between the two countries’ defense ministries and armed forces.

For his part, the Cypriot Minister stressed the importance of the partnership with the UAE in a way that achieves the security and stability of the region.
